Rationale of the Book

There is no scientific literature unanimous definition of nature-based tourism (NBT). Instead, the concept is often used as a synonym to ecotourism, outdoor tourism, and wilderness tourism. The fundamental challenge in studying nature-based tourism (NBT) is defining the consumers and the producers within its complex system and differentiating regular tourists from outdoor recreationists and NBT specific activities from services offered within a destination. This reflects the need for a comprehensive analysis of the phenomenon.

Description of sections and proposed themes

The present handbook will comprise theoretical, empirical and practical contributions. The underlying idea is to publish a ‘globalised’ edited volume, containing contributors from all across the world and critically reflecting on various aspects of NBT development. The book will be classified into five sections:

  • Section 1 aims to conceptualise NBT and reflect on the emerging challenges, including (eco)system approach to NBT development, incorporating sustainability and resilience in the NBT development agenda, reconciling conservation and recreation goals, climate change, and NBT in a time of crises and uncertainties.
  • Section 2 of the handbook deals with the various aspects of management and planning of NBT development at destination level.
  • Section 3 focuses on sustainable visitor experience design and management in NBT. The contributors will holistically address various emerging themes including motivations, behaviours, satisfaction, loyalty, value co-creation and changing nature of tourism demand.
  • Section 4 of the handbook focuses on the impacts of NBT development.
  • Section 5 of the handbook addresses emerging themes within NBT and about the future of NBT.

Important dates

  • Submission of the proposal including abstract deadline: 15th July 2021

  • Submission of the first version of the manuscript: 1st November 2021

  • Submission of the final version of the chapter: 1st March 2022

  • Submission of the final version to the publisher: 1st May 2022

Chapter proposals

A 300 word summary of a proposed chapter should be e-mailed to the editors Dr Ante Mandić and Dr. Sandeep K. Walia on ante.mandic@efst.hr & sndp.walia551@gmail.com by 15th July 2021.

Summaries should describe the scope of the chapter, relevant theoretical, managerial, and/or social perspectives, and the discipline or disciplines whose work the chapter will draw upon. The goals of the chapter should be clear in the proposal. Proposals should represent new, unpublished work. The present handbook welcomes theoretical, empirical and practical contributions.

Proposals should include the author(s)’ short biography (max.100 words) and contact information (Name, Designation, Present Affiliation, Address, Email & Orcid id).

If accepted, full contributions are expected to be not more than 7000 words including references.

The submission of short biopic of the authors/ contributors along with expression of Interest/ Abstract is mandatory.
